I am interested in drawing, music,
writing; thus terms like artist, musician and writer come up. A couple of last
years I have been thinking over and over about these titles and I was
struggling, because these titles concerned me as well. As a critical being –
especially of myself, I am quite dubious about my own skills. After a talk with
my dear friend, I realized that I am not the only one. So I started thinking
once again – what is the real meaning of these words and aren’t we
overestimating them?
A lot of questions pop out in my mind. For
instance, when can you call yourself these names? Or should you be called an
artist by someone else? Where’s the line? Does it concern only pople who are
truly talented and who truly have the skills? Or is it possible that these names are
just a designation of what people are doing? Therefore if I paint, I’ll be
called a painter, because I create something no matter what the quality of my
work is. Honestly, I don’t know what the correct answer is. But I am aware that
this entitlement is connected with the mind of each individual.
So what is the important point of being
called an artist? It is confidence. It means being aknowledged. Obviously
everybody can create anything at any time without being thought of as someone
special. However being confident helps us to move forward and achieve our goals. I
believe there are many people who desire to do what they love, but they are
comparing themselves with others and their artwork stays in their drawer. People,
who think they don’t deserve to be singers, musicians, painters,... They think
of other people whether they want it or not. Every time they create something,
they remember a friend who’s got more experience or other ideas and somehow
they feel inferior and then they start doubting about themselves.
The most important thing what we, who
don’t believe in our skills, have to realize is that we are not doing it for
others. We are doing it for ourselves. If we love it, let’s just do it and work
on it. Though sometimes it takes years until we realize it. Artist or not,
we’re the creators and that’s what counts.
And don’t forget, there’s a saying – fake
it until you become it. So work hard and good luck!
This is probably a question that has also been haunting me since I can remember. Same as you I love writing and music (singing and writing). I sing therefore some would call me a singer. However, because of (a probable lack of) self esteem I considered myself more like a person who enjoys and does some singing. It was after I heard many people calling me a singer that I started calling myself one. So yeah, I can say that I am a singer. Can I say I am a musician or an artist though? That is something I haven't been able to answer. Perhaps the answer is hard to answer considering that I share my place an amazing artist and musician (my husband), fact that makes me feel like if he is a musician/ artist (consider this as variable x) and I am not even close to as good as he is, this would make me variable x- n or x/n or whatever mathematician would like to call it. Therefore, am I an artist? Whatever the degree yeah, I could call myself that. But do I feel as such? Hard to say...
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, titles would only make sense in case, as you mentioned said before, other people labelled you first and you start feeling as such. So in a way, it is a matter of you getting used and fitting (or not) in the title more than labeling yourself before you get your hands dirty or you are acknowledged by what you do.
At the same time, however, the title doesn-t make you in any way more or less what you are!
Artist. musician, writer, painter, you are a creative person and that label nobody can take away from you! :)
Yeah, I completely know what you mean and I would definitely say it has a lot to do with the confidence and comparison for some reason.
DeleteAbsolutely... No matter how you call yourself, it's your work that counts :)
So in conclusion: Artist or not...... it can't stop us doing what we love :D
